I could have sworn I checked the utility room before shutting the door. It's a good thing Spike and Cassie are so on top of their jobs; Elda and Callette were only trapped in there a couple of minutes. Spike was particularly chuffed about getting to use the "Little Timmy's trapped in the well!" routine - daily suburban-pet life doesn't afford him that many Lassie opportunities.

He probably shoved the kittens in there himself. I wouldn't put it past him...

Yay cat toys! (Ten e-points to anyone who guesses the soundtrack)

The second one's a bit dark, but it's the Big Hit Cat Toy of the day - an unripe plum. I don't buy cat toys because they have stupid inflated prices, and my experience with Mum's cat Maisie is that average cat will be curious for five minutes and then ignore toy forever. Admittedly the kittens would probably get more value out of them than Maisie does, but when they can get just as much value out of an unripe plum, a feather, a laundry bag or a cardboard box, I'll go with the free stuff, thanks.

Plums are problematic, though; Squish can't resist stealing them.

I find that the best cat toys are plastic Christmas baubles, walnuts, bottle caps, cardboard boxes and coins! LOL! We have one cat toy in this house that Arrietty is obsessed with, and we didn’t even buy that toy ourselves. If we would have, I would have thought that it was worth the money as she is in love with it, and it’s a lizard that vibrates. Someone bought it for my cats in the US, they hated it, and it ended up over here and Arrietty adores it.

The only other toys I’ve bought that were worth the money were a catnip stuffed fur carrot that my male cat in the US guarded with his life and he loved it so much that it almost fell apart and was DISGUSTING to look at . What was once orange carrot colour was soon grey. I couldn’t take it away from him as he adored it!

The only other toy that was worth anything was a heavy duty “cat fishing pole” with a small toy on the end that my cats in the US played with constantly. I attempted to make one myself but I could never make one strong enough for constant pouncing and dragging.

I did make a carpeted cat stand that the cats in the US loved. I lined it with catnip and they liked it a lot. I saved myself about £100!

Most cat toys are shite, cheaply made, expensive, and I wonder if some of them are dangerous. Surely glittered threads can’t be good for a cat to chew on! I am also almost certain that the folks that make these toys have no clue what cats enjoy doing!

I plan to start growing my own catnip when we move. It’s very potent that way, plus I don’t have to pay for bad catnip at the pet shop. A lot of stuff that’s sold is such a rip-off and not good for the animals themselves.

Sorry about the rant, but I think a lot of the pet supplies out there are outrageously priced and poor quality. Your mileage may vary, of course.

I completely agree with you about cat toys, and also a lot of things sold as dog toys. Even if they aren't dangerous they're WAY too expensive for what they are. I used to buy Spike dog toys but I had to stop after I got Squish - he is the master of disaster, and what he doesn't destroy outright he'll lose somewhere. The only toys I ever buy now are Spike's soft rubber balls, because he can't have tennis balls - he chomps down so hard he's worn the points off his teeth with the abrasive fluff coating, so he has to have soft balls.

The cattens have two of those little plastic balls with bells in that they're quite fond of, but they were just as happy with the plum - anything that rolls and can be chased works for them.

Later today I'm going to stick a feather into a plum and see how they like that :-D
