Evolving up from little snails

Someone started a thread yesterday on TrekBBS for posting pictures of ourselves when young - well, I knew my sister E had scanned a bunch of old family pictures for Mum last year, so I IM'd her to send me some.




This is the earliest one of me. I'd have been about five, which dates the pic to 1971 or so.



This is my dog Katie. I remember taking this picture. I don't remember being that little - despite a clear memory of posing for it, I can't convince myself that little shrimpy thing was ever me.



This is me in our swimming pool with my Granddad and one of my numerous cousins. What the picture doesn't show is that at the time, at the age of, IIRC, eight or so, I'd been convinced by my father that I was a gigantically gross overweight whale like person. It wasn't until decades later I looked at some of these pictures again and thought - what the fuck? What the hell was he on? I wonder now if I'd have had the genuine weight problems I've had later in life if my father hadn't basically invented them for me as a child.

Note that I'm not blaming him for my fat arse, except maybe for his prone-to-fat-arsedness genes. I'm fat because I've spent my life eating too much and not exercising enough. But I don't think it helped that I saw myself as a fatty practically from the time I could walk.



The smaller child is my sister T. (This was a few years before sister E. was born) She's blurred out because she's inordinately paranoid about her face appearing on the 'net, and even more paranoid about being associated with me on the 'net in any way, shape or form.



...can't say I really blame her. This is me indulging two vices at once. If I'd known that James was capturing pics on the webcam at the time, I might have taken the cigarette out of my mouth...then again, I might not.

Empathise with the fat thing. Even when I was 13 I was convinced I was chubby thanks to a few choice remarks from family members especially my Gran. When I look back I see a slim girl who should have told them to FUCK OFF. LOL.

Yeah. I love my Dad, mind you, but I wonder what the hell he though he was going to achieve by destroying an eight year old's self-esteem?

I know he loved me, and wasnt trying to hurt me... but it does do something to youtr psyche...

It really does. I think it's telling that my youngest sister E, who grew up without Dad around, is the only one of the three of us who never had weight problems.

Took me years to convince a stunning hourglass figured voluptous blue eyed blonde friend of mine to wear red, which she freaking blinded people in, because when she had worn it once in her youth her dad had told her "you know they used to paint airplanes red to make them look bigger". Poor thing.

You look like you would have been one helluva fun kid to goof around with. :D

Heh. I was. I was a reckless hedonist even then. I used to invent mad schemes and games and seduce all my friends into going along with them... air mattresses in the swimming pool transformed into pirate ships, prank calls whenever there were no adults in earshot, the time my cousin and I decided to dump the spare bed from her room into the swimming pool.

We got in trouble fairly often, IIRC...
