This pisses me off - why do they expect that a dog wouldn't do something like that? The dog was just being a DOG. I once knew a woman who got pissed off because her new kitten jumped on furniture! She ended up giving the cat away. I was appalled!
I look at it this way. If I have a cat or dog and I don't want something ruined, I KEEP IT AWAY from them. If I don't, and it is destroyed, then it is MY fault.
My big fear is that they will put the dog down because of this.
It would be like putting me in a room with a ton of chocolate. The chocolate wouldn't stand a chance.
He had a great time, obviously! I found the story on CNN and they had pictures of the room after he was through with it: http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/Music/08/02/britain.elvisbear.ap/index.html
I would be very surprised if they put the dog down for this, but I agree, you never know how stupid people will get till they do it.
I'd be surprised as well, but I just get all creepy when people feel that an animal was "bad". No, they weren't bad, they were being a dog, cat, (insert species here)!
Those photos are a riot. It was like something from a documentary "Good Dogs Gone Bad". ;-)
later in the day when I'm a bit more awake I will hunt for an email address or somewhere I can write to, so I can point out to them that predicting the outcome of a dog loose in a room full of stuffed toys: not exactly rocket science.
That dog doesn't look like he went berserk...he looks like he's saying..."Boy ! Did I ever have a ball!"
every single dog I know has something similar to a teddy to carry around with him; some kind of stuffed animal My sister's dogs each have a sheepskin man doll to rip apart and carry.
*snickers* I'd seen the the story through CNN, but not the BBC...
Carnage? Carnage?!
Bwahahahaha! Somehow that makes me want to find them something that's, oh ya know, a bit more messy to clean up.
And really, if the bears were so flipping valuable then why didn't they have them behind glass, in cases, or something? If I had a collection on display that valued at nearly a million dollars, I wouldn't want it within reach of anyone at all, human or animal.
Well the IDEA is that a trained working dog should NOT behave this way. An attack/security/police dog should no more behave this way if it's trained right than a blind person's seeing eye dog should go berserk (heh) if it walks by a sidewalk stand full of plushy toys. It's still more temptation that I'd put the average dog thru tho. I doubt they'll put him down, but due to the training breach he might lose his job.
The issue I have with it is that the dog seems to have been loose and not being supervised, and also that these Hugely Valuable Items must have been accessible.
also, the guard says "I was just stroking Mabel and saying what a nice little bear she was" - that basically amounts to teasing the dog with the bear (And what was he doing playing with the exhibits anyway?). And he couldn't call his dog off - one of the other news reports said he had to chase him through the room. This guy clearly doesn't know shit about dogs and normal dog behaviour. He's the one that needs firing, not the dog.
