No, you can't take that away from me!

Firefox, WTF? It updated itself automagically and uh? Google is not in the search bar, and when I click on "add search engines" it's not there either. What the everloving fuckmonkeys? 0_o

And it gets better. It's not letting me add any search engines. I've attempted to add several, restarted Firefox, rebooted the computer, changed my pretty Firefox theme back to the default theme and then restarted, and none of that made a difference. I have no search engines and I can't add any.

Anyone got any ideas/explanations/solutions?

Apparently Firefox 2 was released today. But afaik it's only a Release Candidate... Strange that that it won't let you change back...

[identity profile] topbit.livejournal.com 2006-10-24 11:08 am (UTC)(link)
FF2 is being release this afternoon, LA/SF time, late tonight UK time. If it's upgraded itself already, then something odd is going on.

Odd is a fucking understatement. I want my Google, damn it!

It was a bit of a shocker. I clciked on Firefox, got a little message saying "Updating yayy!" and then instead of my nice happy personalised 'Fox I got the default theme, no fucking search bar and all my bookmarks and settings eaten. Luckily I back up my bookmarks fairly often, but I still lost a few.

Everything else I managed to set back to the way I wanted it, but this search bar thing is fucking infuriating.

This is a good heads up for me, Liz. Thanks!

I heard about the new FF, but understood it was still a beta... or was that the Mac FF? Anyway, I always save the previous update package for backup purposes. I'll move that to my desktop as a reminder in case the same happens to me.

Good luck getting it ironed out!

They WHAT?!?!?!

Not not not not NOT good!

*goes off to reassure self that her many, many (un-backed-up) bookmarks are safe*

[identity profile] lizblackdog.livejournal.com 2006-10-24 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd back those up now if I were you! Hurts losing them.

[identity profile] kyra-neko-rei.livejournal.com 2006-10-24 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Back up how?

*really, really does not want to have to write out or type out the zillions of URLs*

Is there some kind of thing that does it for you?

Bugger bugger bugger bugger bugger . . .

[identity profile] lizblackdog.livejournal.com 2006-10-24 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. Click on "bookmarks", then click on "manage bookmarks", then click on "file" at the top left, then click "export" and you can save them anywhere you like. Once you've saved them you can email yourself the file as an attachment so you don't lose it even if the hard drive dies.

To reload them into Firefox, do the same except click "import" instead of "export".

Done. Thank you! (Was very easy.) *is lazy and likes easy things*

. . . *waits for James to say something dirty about "likes easy things"*

You could always switch to the new IE7 Beta, it has cool tabbed browsing & Google search ;-)
Everyone knows Microsoft is superior
You will be assimilated

I knew someone was bound to comment with Internet Explorer, but I figured it'd be Huntingdon.

NO. Microsoft smells like poo!

[identity profile] huntingdon.livejournal.com 2006-10-24 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I knew I should have got up earlier!

I was going to say exactly that :D

[identity profile] james-the-evil1.livejournal.com 2006-10-24 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
You will give in AHAHAHAHA

[identity profile] dalaire.livejournal.com 2006-10-24 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL!

Actually, my Dell is bugging the crap out of me with its automatic update. It wants me to download the IE7 full, all 17 gazillion MB of it. (Note: I'm stuck with dialup out here--45.2 Kbs at best.) I'll have to do it eventually because of the couple PITA business sites I deal with that work off Internet Excruciating. Whatta bother.

How I wish I could spring for a new Mac G5.

[identity profile] james-the-evil1.livejournal.com 2006-10-24 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, I read they were going to try to do automatics
Borrrrrrrrrrrrrg

[identity profile] fara-shimbo.livejournal.com 2006-10-24 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Feh! I say, wipe Windows and install Linux. You will be so much happier.
ext_15855: (Default)

[identity profile] lizblackdog.livejournal.com 2006-10-24 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I did try a version of it... but I'm used to Windows and didn't take to it. I think Linux is great for people who are actually into computers - I'm not, though. I'm just into the people and things I need the computer to access.

[identity profile] fara-shimbo.livejournal.com 2006-10-24 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
If you haven't tried it in a few years, you might give it another go. The user interface stuff has improved tremendously. But hey, if you're happy with what you've got, you're way ahead of the rest of the planet.

[identity profile] atimson.livejournal.com 2006-10-24 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Bah. Maybe once Cedega Just Works™… but until then, Linux is an inferior alternative to the home of World of WarCraft. I need my Azeroth fix!

[identity profile] fara-shimbo.livejournal.com 2006-10-24 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, yeah, for WoWC I guess. But the only thing I use Windows for is SimCity so...

[identity profile] dalaire.livejournal.com 2006-10-24 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I do have Linux Xandros on my third PC (at my mother's house next door), and I love working with it: It's compatible with winmodem, people-friendly and lightning fast. Tweaking it isn't too difficult, either. Unfortunately, their update engine is a bigger PITA than even XP's, so just updating Firefox is a lesson in frustration.

I do keep it on there, though. When my mother finally gets around to learning how to use a computer, I think the Xandros will be the kindest to her.

[identity profile] fara-shimbo.livejournal.com 2006-10-24 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, updating Linux is a pain. Whenever I do that I just do a complete reinstall, works much better. But I'd rather a couple days of pain a year than windows crashing every hour on the hour, like it does with my voice recognition stuff.

[identity profile] mcmac74656.livejournal.com 2006-10-24 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm goig to be extremely sad when I graduate and no longer will have daily access to the Macs :(

As for how to fix Firefox, I have no idea, it hasn't yelled at me to update yet.

[identity profile] kyra-neko-rei.livejournal.com 2006-10-24 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Internet Excruciating.

*laughs*

'Tis good. I refer to it as "The Blue E."

And then, of course, there's always AO-Hell. *smirks* Just kidding.

[identity profile] kyra-neko-rei.livejournal.com 2006-10-24 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I only use the Blue E for going onto the sites of opposing political and religious persuasions. So they don't besmirch my history file on FireFox.

Assimilate that.

[identity profile] james-the-evil1.livejournal.com 2006-10-24 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"And all shall have the blue E of the Beast placed upon their desktop or task bar, and verily those who do not bear it shall be forbidden commerce or public discourse"

:D

[identity profile] kyra-neko-rei.livejournal.com 2006-10-24 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, it's on my desktop, I just use FireFox.

*yay loopholes*

[identity profile] james-the-evil1.livejournal.com 2006-10-24 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
*tsk*
Armies of the Beast are coming for you!

[identity profile] kyra-neko-rei.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
*sharpens knives*

Bring it.

[identity profile] james-the-evil1.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Knives cannot stop the Beast, for it comes upon the wings of proprietary code

[identity profile] kyra-neko-rei.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Knives can cut through power cords, and internet connection cables . . . hmmm.

*considers how to avoid getting zapped*
*decides it might be easier to just unplug the things instead*

[identity profile] james-the-evil1.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
and be lost alone in the dark
The E of the Beast triumphs!

[identity profile] kyra-neko-rei.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
Screw it.

*continues using FireFox, ignoring utterly the forces of doom*

[identity profile] james-the-evil1.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
bwahahaha
They're COMING FOR YOU IN THE NIGHT

[identity profile] fara-shimbo.livejournal.com 2006-10-24 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
ACK! It better not update itself on my Linux box! I finally got it just the way I want it!

[identity profile] kyra-neko-rei.livejournal.com 2006-10-24 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I have noooo clue. But then, I never noticed the search bar; when I want to use a search engine I just type in "http://www.google.com" or whatever it happens to be.

Of course, Googling "free and immediate soak in a hot tub with simultaneous shoulder, neck, and scalp massage, wine, and chocolates, because I'm so damn stressed after a thoroughly hectic chemistry lab on far too little sleep and I have bills to pay and where the fuck's my checkbook" doesn't work worth shit.

[identity profile] shy-dramaqueen.livejournal.com 2006-10-24 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Eep! Thanks for the heads-up. *backups*

Have you checked Firefox's automatic bookmark backup files? Maybe it backed them up before updating?

[identity profile] kyra-neko-rei.livejournal.com 2006-10-24 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Automatic bookmark backup files? What are they?

[identity profile] shy-dramaqueen.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
I found them by accident once when I searched for my own backup file, though I can't for the life of me remember where the folder would be located. Just use the search function, "All files and folders", and search for *bookmark*.

Ah, found them. Mine were in C:\Documents and Settings\[My Name]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\cy29x5vl.default\bookmarkbackups. :)

[identity profile] kyra-neko-rei.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks!
