Strangely enough I had some dark chocolate drama this morning. I was woken up by Spike creeping into bed with me and snuggling. This is so very uncharacteristic of him (he prefers to demonstrate affection by wrestling or biting) that it almost stopped me noticing Squish munching on the orange After Eights that I had (most unwisely) neglected to put out of his reach before falling asleep. Luckily he was being fussy about taking them out of the little paper sleeves, so he'd only eaten about four of them before I took them away - nowhere near enough for chocolate poisoning to be a real concern - though I shall be watching him carefully today all the same...

I can't decide if Spike's unusual behaviour was intended to alert me to Squish's wrongdoing (probably not - Spike doesn't hesitate to enforce my rules with Squish, but he's usually much more direct - lunge and snap, not "I'm telling on you!") or cover up for it - thinking it over, the most likely answer is that Spike saw Squish getting a treat and was insisting on some extra attention for himself to compensate. Spike doesn't find food especially exciting, and in any case it would have been most unwise for him to try and claim a share of anything Squish was eating. Squish usually gives way to Spike, but if anything edible is involved he'll defend it with extreme prejudice.
