Absurdly cheerful. Amazing what a difference a shot of natural endorphins can make. Or the startling prospect of someone actually being a friend - which is a calmer, quieter pleasure, but perhaps an even deeper one.

It's not an entirely new sensation - my friendslist and my PM folders at more than one BBS are stuffed with older infatuations, and I especially cherish the ones who didn't disappear after the initial buzz wore off - those would be Herbie, JW and James so far - but I have to admit that physical proximity makes one hell of a difference.

Time to change the subject before someone's head gets too big to fit through doorways. [livejournal.com profile] captain_lila - I wrote a bit more this morning and I have a lot more itching to spill out, but I need to talk to you before I do any more, or we'll end up writing two different stories. Besides, I've missed you. Here's the link, and it's in my memories as well. Clicking on the heart symbol will add it to yours.

There are men on ladders outside my windows. They've been there since eight o'clock this morning. I did cherish a secret hope that it was the TKers or some of the Naughty Nerds trying desperately to catch a glimpse of my glory in the flesh, but they turned out to be council workers come to clean out the guttering and repaint the outside woodwork. I haven't flashed them yet - I'm a little worried it might make them fall off their ladders...

Must hoover.

  1. border collies:
Border collies. Are they truly smarter than a chimpanzee? Cuddlier than a Koala? More dedicated than Batman's valet? Can they change course in midair? Drag Nell from the tracks and locate the missing microfilm?
Yes. I believe they can. They are the best of the best, the epitome of "above and beyond the call of duty." Head dog. Top Gun. I salute you, for man has never had a better friend.

(From a poem by Baxter Black)

  2. cheese:
Food of the gods. From the rarefied oozing blues right down to the processed factory slices - I never met a cheese I didn't love.

  3. dog rescue:
If there was any justice in the world, it wouldn't be necessary. I'm not in a position to do as much as I'd like - no car and my own two rescued dogs can't be left alone for long - but I do a little.

Besides, they rescued me first. It's the least I can do.

  4. evolutionary psychology:
Why we think the way we do.

  5. footrot flats:

  6. j.k. rowling:
    Who isn't?

  7. pain:
The necessity of it, the reality of it, good pain, bad pain, the blurred line between the two...

  8. second chances:
    Speaks for itself.

  9. ted hughes:
I sit in the top of the wood, my eyes closed.
    Inaction, no falsifying dream
Between my hooked head and hooked feet:
Or in sleep rehearse perfect kills and eat.

The convenience of the high trees!
The air's buoyancy and the sun's ray
    Are of advantage to me;
And the earth's face upward for my inspection.

My feet are locked upon the rough bark.
It took the whole of Creation
To produce my foot, my each feather:
Now I hold Creation in my foot

Or fly up, and revolve it all slowly -
I kill where I please because it is all mine.
There is no sophistry in my body:
My manners are tearing off heads -

    The allotment of death.
For the one path of my flight is direct
Through the bones of the living.
    No arguments assert my right:

    The sun is behind me.
Nothing has changed since I began.
My eye has permitted no change.
I am going to keep things like this.
