I think I've mentioned that Spike always wakes me in the mornings? Sometimes he nosepokes me, sometimes he jumps on me, sometimes he pulls the covers off me and sometimes he just sits and stares. Those of you who've never been on the sharp end of a Border Collie stare - this is no ordinary stare. This is a psychic pointy stick, a finely crafted instrument of force, the distilled end result of thousands of generations of dogs bred specifically for the ability to control large numbers of creatures bigger than themselves mainly with their eyes. Visitors who've never met Spike before are frequently freaked out by it.
And this morning he decided to use it to mess with my head at five a.m. I don't know how long it took him to wake me out of a deep sleep with his eyes alone, but I'm betting it wasn't long. As soon as I woke up he whined and stared at the bedroom door - isn't it time to let the cats out now, Mum? I'm boooored!
I foresee him needing a lot of TLC and extra walks when those kittens leave.
