Many thanks to
ramona for her suggestion of pasta twists as shiny new cat toys - I have five kittens (one a few months older than the others) chasing and batting and pouncing and skidding merrily up and down the hallway, much to Spike's joy.
Mum visited us this afternoon and brought a bagful of marrowbones with her for the dogs. The kittens immediately pounced on Spike's (and really enjoyed it, especially Callette) so I had to get a third one out of the bag for him.
I've given up trying to make sure Squish doesn't end every marrowbone-day sitting protectively on all the bones. He always gets them in the end. I just give Spike the best one to start with because I know he won't keep it for long. Squish won't directly steal another dog's bone, but Spike always loses interest and wanders off to do something else and then Squish is in there like a striking snake, because a bone that's not actually being sat on is public property.
of course, Squish being Squish, once he's got possession he won't leave it except to pee.
