It was sometime around 1989 that I wandered into W. H. Smith and, rummaging through their music section, found a pile of cassettes knocked down to half price because they'd lost their inlay cards. One of the cassettes caught my eye. I had never heard of the band, but their name made me smile and hey, it was only £1.50. So I bought it, and walked home playing it on my Walkman.

I don't think I have ever been quite so blown away by any piece of music on first hearing. The cassette was Silvertown, by the awesome Men They Couldn't Hang. I had played it to destruction inside a year and I've remained in love with them ever since.

One thing about this band is that they're really meant to be a live band. And what with one thing and another (they had a spell of being broken up, I had spells of not really living in the sort of world where one goes to see bands) I have never yet seen them live, I always felt the lack keenly.

Look what's coming to my town. I have a ticket clutched in my hot sweaty hand. I am so fucking excited about this it's not even funny.

*bounce bounce*

P.S. I deeply, deeply regret that I couldn't afford to go and see Jello Biafra as well. Same place, same week! I hope he comes back sometime.
