I have used them to stop the dogs being arseholes, but not to smack the DOG with - if I smack the couch or bed really hard with one, it stops whatever they're doing instantly.
it freaks Spike out a bit to have one too near him, though. The guy wasn't actually attempting to hit him with it, but it was enough to make him - a bit obnoxious.
