Way way way way way (and I mean way) back in the day, I worked at a vet's office as a kennel attendant. We adopted a dog and the vet that we worked for (we being my mother and I), shaved her belly to see if she was spayed. No scar.
So the vet opened her up, rooted around in her abdomen for a while, and finally determined that she was spayed from the side, which apparently only one vet in the area did regularly.
End summary -- yes, some vets do it, though it's more common from the belly. :)
