Sounds a little like what I went through with Yahoo!Mail nearly four years ago. They made an unannounced "upgrade" which was (according to them) seven different kinds of fantastic, but in actual practice was not very useful at all as Yahoo had decided it was now much too cool for the old machine I was using and locked up my browser every time I went to check for messages.
I still have the Yahoo! account and occasionally reactivate it and visit its acres of spam, but Gmail has been quite satisfactory for me as a mail account since that business.
