I was feeling guilty about Spike getting more happy ballfetching fun than Squish, so I loaded up my rucksack with the clothesline and paraphernalia and headed to the little park with the goalposts. I gave Spike a few throws (he has to go first or he becomes unbearable) and then tied him up and unwound Squish's clothesline and clipped that on. So far so normal.
Squish did one throw and then saw something (cat? squirrel? For all I know he brought Harvey with him) He took off at full speed. He's taken off before and been caught short but this time he had double the length of the line to gather speed in... and the line snapped like a cotton thread.
Remember, the last time this happened it took me half an hour to get him back?
Me: *kneels down and plasters a shit-eating grin on my face*
(ohshitohshitohSHITOHSHIT!!!) Squishy come! (Happy fun voice concealing the black terrified despair in my heart)
Squish: Sure thing, Ma! Where's the ball?
*comes INSTANTLY*
Me: (incredulous) Goood BOY!!!
I had my hand on his collar. My joy and relief knew no bounds. There weren't enough meatballs in the world to reward that moment. It had to be something better.
I threw the ball and let him go again.
He came straight back again. And again. And again.
I stopped after about six throws, because my nerves couldn't take it. I had to leave the clothesline at the park because Squish hitting the end pulled the knot too tight for me to undo.
But - OMGSQUISHY YAYYYYY!!!!
