Well, the nursing home visit went well. There was a little green space across the road, so I took him there first with his ball to let off some steam. Then we introduced ourselves to Becky who was responsible for bringing us there - head nurse or manager or something? I forget... anyway, Spike, who always knows just who to suck up to, made like he'd fallen in love with her at first sight (he did the same to our PAT coordinator when we went for the temperament testing). We went round all the old folks in the three lounges... this is when Spike's 'say hello' command came in useful, I could direct him to greet each old person individually rather than make love to Becky or stare out of the patio doors in the vain hope for cats, which is what he really fancied doing. He was a big hit, and I heard a lot of dog stories from people who'd always had dogs and couldn't any more... please let me die before that happens to me...

We didn't stay all that long, as Spike was starting to get stressed (when he starts playing tug with the leash I know he's liable to turn vampire soon if the stimulus isn't reduced) and it was excruciatingly warm in there, but I plan on going back ASAP... Becky's off this week coming, though, so it'll have to be the week after. On the way home I realised that since there's that little greenspace, I can always alternate between visiting and short ball sessions, and keep his stress level down and stay longer next time.

On the way home I passed a garden with runner beans in full flood - a great hank of vine had rambled over the fence and there were all these runner beans dangling over the pavement. I'm bad, me... I picked 'em...
