Snow snow snow snow snow snowsnowsnowSNOWWWW!!!!

Just come from romping with the dogs in the park, where, for the first time EVER, they didn't get in each other's faces at all. The problem I always had before was that Spike is crap at sharing and crap at not constantly being the centre of attention, and Squish has the instincts of a gundog and the attention span of a developmentally challenged goldfish - so either Spike would put on his afterburners and shark the ball out from under Squish's nose, after which Squish would be too scared to attempt any more ball chasing, or else Squish would forget what we were doing in the time it took me to give Spike a throw and wander off hedgehunting.

It wasn't a biggie when I lived at Mum's - I'd just take each dog out one by one - but since I've lived here with no cat and no other humans, neither of them is prepared to stay in the flat alone while the other goes off with me to have fun. Spike has a VERY BIG BARK for his size, and Squish has a piercing shrill one that grates on the nerves like a baby crying, and I have downstairs neighbours who fire off angry letters to the Council every time one of them barks for longer than three seconds - so even after I got the dog crates, that was a non-starter. So I tried something different today - each dog has a turn at playing with me while the other is tied to the goalpost in the park, where he can watch the other dog's turn but not interfere or wander off.

It worked brilliantly. I can't think why it took me so long to come up with it. I are stooopid sometimes - but I get there in the end. Phew!

Also, Squish came every time I called him today. I need to find somewhere fenced - the playing field at Winton Rec, maybe - so I can give him a trial without his long line. I have a feeling his selective deafness may be wearing off as his teenage years draw to a close. Being able to trust the little speckled bugger offleash would save an awful lot of hassle.

Yay for doggies in the snow, reenacting scenes from The Lion The Witch And The Wardrobe! ;p

If I tied Maggie up while I played with Charlie, she'd just bark and bark and bark and bark and bark and bark and bark.

Spike did, the first time, but after he'd been untied, had another turn of his own and been tied up again he seemed to get the idea and settled down. I was very very pleased with him.

ha ha ha! I'd never be able to listen to her barking long enough to have her learn. :)

If it had been Squish I might have had a problem - but Spike is my fast learner, thankfully...

Poor Maggie, she got the short end of the brain stick. :(

Some day, I'll have a yard and all my worries will be forgotten. :)

I would dearly love a yard myself. I don't really mind having to take them out on-leash six times a day, except for that first one in the morning. I really need to sit quietly for at least two hours drinking coffee and smoking before I can cope with the day - I've trained them to let me have about forty minutes as long as I take them out really late the night before, but it's not long enough.

Maggie doesn't need brains, she (like Squish) is cute and funny and cuddly and bouncy and beautiful enough that she'll always be loved. We can't all be rocket surgeons...

I can usually get an extra half an hour or so from Maggie, but my dogs sleep in long after I get out of bed - lazies!!!

six times a day is a lot. :)

It's more than they really need just to pee and poo (unless Squish has been scavenging again, then all bets are OFF) but it helps keep them from bouncing off the walls too much. I can't let them get too boisterous in the flat because of cranky downstairs neighbour and the concrete floor and me with no carpets. He's had words with me about it before now.

That's a good point too. I try to keep everything down to a dull roar before and after 8am and 8pm.

My dogs wake me up every morning. Spike sits on my chest and Squish licks my toes. They say sleep is for sissies. Wanna swap dogs?

From: [identity profile] cottonmanifesto.livejournal.com

Um. Nope. This morning the dogs woke up as I was putting my boots on to take them out at 9:10. :)

Wow. If I stand up at all, or even look as if I'm about to stand up, I'm immediately surrounded by bouncing black and white bodies going YAYYYYYY OMGWALKOMGWALKOMGSQUEEEEWALKWALK!!!!ONE!!!

But then I live alone with no other humans and no cats, so I'm pretty much their sole source of amusement.

ha ha ha! My husband leaves for work between 6:30 and 7, I get up at around 7:30 and the dogs (usually Maggie) get up at 8:30. If Charlie had a choice, he'd probably sleep in 'til 10 or so.

Our beagles could program a wristwatch...every morning they begin whining from inside their crates if not fed promptly by 6am. It's earlier if they hear/see signs of life in the wee hours of the morning - i.e., brother getting up to get a glass of water. This whining increases exponentially by decibel levels until they get a response.

It begins again (crateless) around 5pm, when they know they get their dinner.

Like clockwork.
