I've also been working with the Squish dog, after the brainstorming in your journal and in dogtrainers - I'm going to get him a dot of his own, I got given an idea for making him a back-up collar for when he breaks his next one (he has this poltergeist quality to him that makes me sure it'll happen again some time), and I've discovered the ultimate dog treat - Swedish meatballs. Both dogs think they're the best thing since man discovered fire and invented the couch - they're the only food treat that ever got Squish's attention outdoors. Amazed!
They're like dog crack! Spike's never been a great one for food treats but this morning he took his eyes off a squirrel when I said the word "meatball". Never seen anything like it - not cheese, hot dogs, cooked chicken skin, roast pork even.
I'm doing the Shirley Chong thing with them - my special word is "meatball" because I suffered an imagination failure. I should've picked "fuckwad", damn it.
At the moment I'm just meatballing at odd moments through the day when the Squisher isn't too preoccupied, but already the word makes his head snap round in a very satisfying way.
Gonna buy him a laser pointer tomorrow. I've got to go down to the key-cutting place to get him a new collar tag anyway, and I'm pretty sure they sell 'em there. Yayyy dot fun!
Lol!! I think 'meatball' is a great word and can be used even around the children. Imagine a parents delight as a woman says "FUCKWAD!" and her dog spins around and comes right to her.
I think meatball is good because you won't be using it randomly like you would fuckwad. Who says 'meatball' when faced with their daily stupidities? :)
This is true, I am inclined to say fuckwad quite often in a non-dog-training context, which makes it unsuitable. I still think I should have picked something more obscure or geeky like "Rosebud" or "tractor beam" or "self-sealing stem bolt", though.
He's gonna love dot. I've seen him spend two hours trying to catch the reflection off his own collar tag...
