Spike just got told off by me and then smacked around by Cassie for nosepoking Shona a bit too hard and sudden-like. I have to watch him. It's very easy to say he loves cats and doesn't want to hurt them, and it would be broadly true, but it's too easy to subscribe to the Lassie myth, especially with a dog like Spike.

What's really going on with Spike and cats is that he wants to herd them. He does understand very well that biting is not the done thing when herding, but I don't entirely trust him to remember that infallibly. I especially don't entirely trust it when he's extremely worked up, when Cassie's losing her mind with protectiveness and attacking him, or when there's more than one kitten and they're moving fast in front of his nose.

Constant vigilance.

sadly, I just failed to photograph Shona lying on her back with Spike's whiskers touching her belly, Shona walking under his belly and rubbing against his leg and Shona pouncing on his paw, because the batteries in the recharger were in loose and didn't recharge. So no kitten pics today. But they're charging properly now and I shall be making forty-eight LJ entries tomorrow, so I think I can safely promise you kittens in the very near future.

Had another of my recurring dreams when I fell asleep this afternoon - one of the good ones. Another thing I'm saving to be subject matter for tomorrow.

I'm so very unprepared for this. But I will do it, even if the last twelve entries are breakdowns of my fridge contents or a catalogue of the unreachable items under the couch... I will do it.

Ha, yes.

I've had trouble staying awake all week. This is going to be... something.

Although I will have coffee, so I don't really doubt my ability to not sleep - my ability to make any sense while not sleeping is something else again, though!

Herding cat = tilting at windmills. Poor Spike. I think a name change is in order. ;)

Or the Kobayashi Maru or Serenity Valley or the First Evil? Those are all covered by the names he already has!

I know, I know! I just meant that he's already named after three great big damn heroes with a taste for hopeless causes. And I'm a fangirl, not a classic literature lover.

(as in, I know roughly what it is and I know who wrote it but I never actually read it)

Oh hell, I've never read it either. I'm more of the fangirl class myself, when it gets down to it. I just have a bluffer's surface knowledge of that sort of thing.

*phew*

There's a Lord Peter Wimsey quote that'd be perfect right now, if I could only remember it :-D

Spike had to be named after characters I love that fit his personality... I think "James Tiberius Spike Reynolds" gives a pretty accurate picture of what he's like to live with.

...and an even more accurate picture of the doting fangirl who loves him.

One day I'm going to get a big, butch, not very bright cat and call him 'Jayne'. :D

You should do all the desperate, I don't know what to post about things first. LOL That way when everyone else is posting exaclty what is in their trash can, you can post something really good!

I demand to know what unreachable items are under the couch.

There's a small caramel-filled chocolate egg under there, for one thing. Can't get the fucker out even with the broom handle!

Oh expletive! Already? Can you shoot me the link to your sponsorship page?

Jet does that with Ash, sometimes, but she seems to have mostly grown out of it. When Ash first moved in here Jet just followed her around everywhere, I'm told.

Try not to fall asleep on your keyboard. You'll catch qwertyitis. ;)

Spike lived with Mum's Maisie cat for two years and showed no sign of ever growing out of it, unfortunately. I'd like to think his interest in tyhe kittens will get less intense but knowing him, it's unlikely.

Ah well, I only have to worry about it for another five weeks or so...
