So I've been catwatching in the mornings, instead of just throwing them their chicks and going to drink my coffee, and now I know why Fat Hamish Kitten is fat and the three girlcats aren't. I throw in four dead day-old chicks and each cat grabs one. The girl cats start playing with theirs, flipping them in the air, batting, mock-killing them before they start eating. Hamish doesn't bother. He grabs one, takes it to the corner cushion and MUNCHMUNCHMUNCH. This morning, he had finished his chick entirely before any of the others had actually started eating theirs.

So instead of leaving him to steal maybe all three of their chicks, I picked him up and took him for a photo-session, and shut the bedroom door so the girls could eat without being mugged by a greedy man cat twice their size.

I included my hand in the pics for scale. Please note I do not have tiny dainty little hands. He's not quite five months old yet and he really is that big.

I think so. I'm completely in love with him myself. He's still going on a diet though.

He's actually a worse foodhound than Squish is. Every time I go in the kitchen for anything he races in there at top speed and lands on the cardboard box with a THUMP like someone dropping a furry cannonball.

Well, even at ideal weight he'd still be a huge cat - it's not ALL fat!

i am hoping that cutting back his chick intake (I've got a feeling he was stealing everyone's chicks) and the fact that he's still growing will take care of the oversize belly. I really don't want to do too much messing around with the food if I can help it.

cats are awkward bastards.

yeah, it is.

of course, I am stupid. I should have realised from the beginning that there ought to be a special word meaning "I am about to give you food" so they didn't have to all turn up looking hopeful every time I go to make coffee or drop something into the bin.

as of today, the word is "catfood". I'm betting that they'll all continue to beg at other times anyway, though. They're more optimistic and more stubborn than dogs, and much more confident of bending me to their will.
