[Poll #1050350]

As you can see, I'm falling in love all over again. Every time I go back to Farscape after a spell of not watching any I ask myself incredulously how I managed to live without it this long. It really is the show that has everything: emotional complexity, depth of character, good writing, kickass women with guns, Ben Browder in tight leather, huge explosions and Muppets. And Scorpius, who gets a sentence all to himself. That face-licking thing of his... *shiver*

So. Damn. Bloody. Good.

I consider Farscape the best Scifi Show ever conceived, and one of the best TV shows ever. I would show a friend The Premiere episode first, but the first few weeks, anywhere in the seasons would have worked. Actually, now that I think about it, if the final four episodes of the first season doesn't get a friend hooked, I don't know what will.

Mmm. If I were there and watching with said friend, I'd start at the beginning. But you have a good point; there's the Aurora chair and there's Stark (My side! Your side! My side! Your side!) and... AHHH I have to go watch season one now. WOO HOO!

From: [identity profile] mwenyekischaa.livejournal.com

Or "Through the Looking Glass," with Rygel singing:

"Oh there is no expanse of the mind the will cannot traverse,
Or phsyically the distance laid across the universe,
His blessings many in the stars save one lamented curse:
That sixteeth Rygel, glory me, should travel in reverse!"

That whole episode, muah.

Or! Crichton wearing PUKE! "Crackers Don't Matter", muahahah...

...I like the insane mindfuck episodes the best. (g)

Crichton: What the hell is this?
Zhaan: Heat-reflecting paste. You'll burn up in there without it.
Crichton: Smells like puke.
Zhaan: I predigested it to increase its potency.
Crichton: It's PUKE?!

Crichton: ::starts making hero-soundtrack noises, strikes a pose::
Aeryn: ...We are going to die.

AAHHHH YES! Crackers Don't Matter is my favourite episode ever, actually. I think you need to already love the show to "get" the truly insane mindfuck episodes, though.

From: [identity profile] mwenyekischaa.livejournal.com

Probably, especially the later ones. But I started off somewhere in the middle of the first season and had to catch the reruns for the beginning of it all, and even after falling in love with the series that one with D'Argo going ga-ga in an alien nightclub still makes me want to get up and flee the room for a few minutes because it's so completely fucked up. ::cackle::

Then there's the Looney-Tunes-ish one. Wtf. O.o
ext_15855: (Default)

From: [identity profile] lizblackdog.livejournal.com

ah yes; the nightclub scene that ends in John and D'Argo waking up in a shop display window wearing fishnet stockings and feathers? SO MUCH LOVE. And the Looney Tunes one is awesome. Remember Aeryn as Jessica Rabbit?

From: [identity profile] orac-zen.livejournal.com

No...but I can shrink it if you like.

I'm still deciding on an ep for the poll, but I'll get back to it. Remind me if I forget.

*reminds you*

It's probably moot, because I doubt I'm going to convince this particular friend to try it, for various reasons. But I still want to know what people think.

From: [identity profile] orac-zen.livejournal.com

Sorry. I knew I'd forget.

So many great eps, but so many of them rely on back story. So I'd probably start at the beginning, given that Farscape's pilot ep is one that deals with all the necessary universe setup in an unusually succinct way and sets up the core characters brilliantly. It's one of the show's (many) strengths: However uneven some of the early (and later) episodes are, the characters were themselves from day one and the actors owned their characters completely. The show's almost unique in that sense.

So after all that, I'd probably vote for the pilot ep.

(Btw, I've shrunk that icon. Lemme know if you want it.)

Oooh, yes please! I did a bt of icon hunting after this post and have more Farscape icons now - incidentally, if you don't already have [livejournal.com profile] fs_weekly on your f-list, you probably want to - but I do love that one.

Also, answer my poll please! I need opinions from qualified, trusted fanfolks such as yourself.

i cant pick a favorite, i love ALL of them! i just watched the entire series earlier this year as my mom has the dvd sets. i'd never seen it before and caught one episode on tv after everything had been cancelled and got hooked. they never should have ended that show, it was awesome! i do like the episode where rygel ends up pregnant with chriton and aeryns baby. i like the stark my side your side bit. i like scorpius in chritons brain after chriton has the thingy removed but scorpius is still there. oh, and the one where they get switched into each others bodies was pretty good too.

From: [identity profile] lizblackdog.livejournal.com

Yes. It's hard to pick a moment when there are so many good ones, isn't it? And the look and the feel of the whole thing, the design; that makes me so happy. And just... everything. It's hard, though, to convince someone who's not really a sci-fi fan that they'll enjoy a show where some of the best actors are, um... not actually alive.

Why so difficult?

Damnit, that was hard.

Ended up going with The Way We Weren't for several reasons:

[*] Top notch acting from all concerned, especially the muppets

[*] The revelation of full, compelling backstories for character.

[*] It's the one I used in uni to hook my housemate ;)

Well, the restaurant, it, uh, sort of burned down - I don't want to talk about it,

Oooh, your subject line reminded me of another one of my favourite episodes; by which I mean I-Yensch You-Yensch. The cook and the blonde girl and all their backstory and the insurance scam and poor Braca and SO MUCH LOVE!

Thank you, though. That's what I want; episodes to hook someone. It's hard for a longterm fangirl to tell whatll work best on someone coming to it fresh.

...also, I really need a D'Argo icon. *runs off to find one*

Re: Why so difficult?

I watched The Way We Weren't last night. You could well be right. Watched I-Yensch You-Yensch and Crackers Don't Matter too, just because I wanted to. So much joy. Tonight is Look At The Princess (mainly for the immortal line "It's not you, it's me. I just don't like you" and also for D'Argo's TMI moment just as John tuens to stone. Awesomeness.) and Scratch 'n' Sniff. I thin my head may explode with pleasure.

I'm very fixated on D'Argo right now, because he's so kickass and he's Captain. I never was before.

Re: Why so difficult?

Damn it, now you've got me all confused. I was going to spend my weekend watching season 3 of Galactica, but all the Farscape love you're spreading's reminded me just how mcuh I love the show, and I want to watch all of them again.

Blast you. ;)

Haaaa! Chalk one up for the good bad good bad interesting complex guys!

Not that BSG isn't faboo and all. But it's not Farscape calibre, in my utterly unhumble opinion.

From: [identity profile] queenettefallon.livejournal.com

Strange, I haven't actually watched Farscape since I originally did. That's strange because I really did love the show, though there were moments where I thought it was overly dramatic and I was kinda bored through most of the John/Aeryn stuff. Don't get me wrong, it was a well done ship, better done than most canon ships. But sometimes I just got a bit bored with the will they/won't they BS. Do it or don't, because if you keep dragging it out I'll start hoping it won't happen simply because I'm already tired of it.

Anyway, despite all that it is still one of the best (if not the best) Sci-Fi show ever!

PS - On the poll, I really can't think of one, because as others have mentioned some of the better episodes (in my opinion) really rely on one knowing the show fairly well. Perhaps you should start at the beginning, or at least one of the first season episodes at least.

Go watch again! You won't be sorry. It's making me so happy right now.

From: [identity profile] miz-geek.livejournal.com

If it's for my brother-in-law, don't start with Episode 1. This is the man who called up a week after Christmas calling us crack dealers for giving him Firefly even though it had been canceled, so we were sure he'd like Farscape. But he didn't like the creatures or the aliens or something. Grrr. We'll have to try him again on one. Maybe on the winner of your poll.
ext_15855: (Scorpy: Bad Boy)

From: [identity profile] lizblackdog.livejournal.com

Yes... Firefly was a good one for people who are dubious about sci-fi, because of the no aliens thing. Farscape needs a bit more suspension of disbelief.

Mind you, the person I'm thinking of liked Buffy and Angel, so I don't think non-humans'll be a big issue. It's just convincing them to try it, and I was hoping for a good place to start. I'm not sure Episode One is it; yes, it explains stuff, but the episodes after it aren't Farscape's best. I have a feeling the later stuff might be more... hooking.

From: [identity profile] miz-geek.livejournal.com

He's a huge sci-fi fan, but more novels than television.

I think the later seasons are stronger, but I wouldn't think you'd want to start too late. (Although we started watching Buffy at season 4 and look how we turned out.) I think the funny episodes work better if you know the characters, although they tend to be my favorites. The Way We Weren't might be a good choice. Not too far along, gives some backstory, nice and dark (if he's a fan of Buffy & Angel).
