SPIKE SAYS HAI THAR LIVEJOURNAL!

It's ridiculous hot here, his cone acts like a miniature head-greenhouse, I have to rub Vaseline on his lower lip several times a day which he loathes, I can barely walk and we're all grumpy as fuck. Also it took me seven attempts to take this one picture because he kept either rolling, jerking his head out of focus or staring at the cat over his shoulder at an odd angle that made him look whale-eyed and traumatised.

but that's okay <3

thats quite the underbite he's left with! the hair growing in blends nicely. does he have nose holes in his newly shaped snout?

yes he does - see that vertical seam down the middle? The two sides of that aren't attached to each other and the nose holes are under there. The vet says he may want to open the gap out a bit once the rest of it's all thoroughly healed up, but he CAN breathe through it, although it makes him blow raspberries a lot.

I really want it opened out more; right now Spike either has to breathe through his mouth which dries his tongue out, or he's snorking and blowing raspberries through that slit which is harder work for him than breathing should be. Plus it's getting warm and his heat tolerance was bad enough before all this happened. But it can't be done till everything else is all really solidly healed and it's not quite there yet.

You neglected to mention your long-suffering mother who turned up with ibuprofen gel (although sorely needed for her own arthritis!) and vast quantities of elasticated bandages and who then proceeded to take Squish and Spike out for walkies and craps! And who unfailingly and with great unselfishness gladly transports you and said dogs to and from the vets! and bankrupts herself in the process!!! love from your unappreciated mother!

its wonderful that liz has such a supportive and helpful mum!

blowing raspberries hua, at least he's providing some comedy relief for the situation! any idea how long until he's well and solidly healed so they can open it up more?

i had sinus surgery once and those few days right after when my nose was stuffed with packing really sucked. i didnt appreciate having to be a mouth breather, i imagine spike probably shares the sentiment.

I don't know. The vet didn't seem very enthusiastic about doing it at all, but I'm going to try and get him to. Spike's very active and very heat-intolerant and he really needs to be able to breathe more easily than he is now.

Okay, when you were duct-taping his collar, you couldn't just do a nifty design and make him look all sporty?

he needs stickers on the collar..
he's a serious dog, serious dogs need stickers

the only other time I've seen hair growth that fast is when I'm on vacation and have JUST shaved my legs =) Scritches for the wounded one from us here in NJ please

Aww poor little spikey.

Our family dog Minty has had a few surgeries lately she has to wear one of those plastic cones to stop her from chewing her wound.

She's getting there but she's very old so we have to keep a close eye on her.
