Dear Spike,

YOU ARE NOT A FUCKING CAT.

SIX FOOT WALLS HAVE SIX FOOT DROPS WHEN YOU COME DOWN OFF THEM.

IF YOU HAD COME DOWN ON THE OTHER SIDE YOU WOULD HAVE LANDED ON CONCRETE INSTEAD OF THAT GREAT BIG SOFT COMPOST HEAP.

DO NOT EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER DO THAT TO ME AGAIN.

YOU FUCKER.

LOVE, YOUR STILL-TREMBLING MUM.

...We're in the park and a cat decides it wants to live dangerously. Due to a freakish combination of the cat's chosen escape route and shrubbery and stuff against the base of the wall, he managed to get entirely on top of the wall and fucking RUN ALONG IT.

I swear that fucker's taken ten years off my life in the five years I've had him.

My second-worst* dog walk nightmare nearly happened today.

Spike and Squish and I were walking home from the One Stop. We turned the corner from Jewell Road onto Throop Road, and there was an orange cat lounging in the grass on the corner. We nearly stepped on him. The dogs freaked; the cat freaked, and naturally enough, the cat ran like hell.

Right into the road, right into the path of an oncoming car.

Orange cat was probably not feeling lucky today, but he was luckier than he knew. That car was coming round the corner and already going slow, and the driver saw him. When the car came to a stop its front bumper was just touching the terrified cat's back; but the cat was unhurt.

My dogs were on-leash, we were walking along a pavement. They were not chasing the cat or out of control. If the cat had been killed we would have been technically blameless. "Technically" being the operative word here.

I'm just very, very relieved.

* The very worst nightmare would be the dogs breaking/yanking the leash out of my hand and being in the road themselves. This has also nearly happened to Squish once, which is more than sufficient for any one lifetime, thank you.

Grrr. I thought it was Sunday but apparently it's actually Caturday - the day when the local cats use my dog to get their zoomie adrenaline rush and week's worth of hard exercise.

Spike's normal standard of recall is pretty fucking high. But by the time the third cat had offered itself up for happy fun chase games, his adrenaline level had cut off most of his brain function - and what brain he had left knew damn well that I'd take him home the moment he came within touching distance. So he wouldn't, and although he was taking care to stay close and not attempting to leave the park, I was forced to use trick psychology* to get the leash back on him.

If I'd been stupid enough to have Squish completely loose, I'd still be hunting him now.

*I gave Squish his ball. I had a spare in my pocket, but Spike didn't know that till he'd come back and given me the "OMG YOU DID WHAT??!!" face.

Ooooops.

Ran into Spike's buddy Chico and the Shih Tzu Crew on our morning walk. I knew from conversations with the owners that they had cats as well. I did not know that one of their cats occasionally accompanies them on walks. If I'd known that I certainly wouldn't have unleashed Spike.

I hope she can get down from that tree all right.

More bad news.

Anyone who read Joey's story and cried - there's a whole colony of cats there in just as bad a shape. All our prayers and good thoughts couldn't save him but maybe we can save the others, maybe we can stop there being fifty more like him next kitten season.

watch Naamah's journal and mine for links.

P.S. Yeah, I know Steve Irwin died. I'm sorry that happened too, but this is more important. This is something we can try and prevent.

Prayer/good wishes/good thoughts request: for my downstairs neighbour's younger Jack Russell Terrier. She's the black and white excitable one who makes the unearthly screeching sound whenever she lays eyes on Spike (who would love to be her friend, if only she didn't passionately want to kill him). She was hit by a car this morning - she was offleash in a fenced area, but there turned out to be a hole in the fence and she got onto the road. I'm told it was a glancing blow and neighbour believes she will probably be all right, but she may have internal injuries. She's still at the vet's under observation.

Second but not least: Joey, a neglected kitten rescued by the wonderful [livejournal.com profile] naamah_darling. She suggested I wait to link until she had pictures of him, but I am incurably impatient and besides, he needs good thoughts now. I watch my healthy bouncy kittens wall-of-deathing round the room, trashing my possessions, scarring my legs and tormenting my dogs and my heart breaks for that poor baby. Read about Joey here and here.

There will be a happy entry about my own family later, with meatballs, but for now my spoiled, uninjured animals want you to concentrate on the less lucky ones.
